cloth nappies – some truths

Posted by: nappywraps on: July 1, 2010

well considering i make and sell cloth nappies, its only right that i do a blog about them..

Alot of people are put off at the thought of washing them in their machine.. but really its not as difficult as you think..

If baby has done a number 2 then you just empty the contents into the toilet, and then wash the nappy in the machine.. at a 60 wash or below.

There is no real need to boil wash, infact its not really a good idea as this can ruin the fabrics.. making them less absorbant.

There is no need to soak nappies in a bucket, this too can break down some fabrics.. its better to keep them in a nappy bag, or a dry bucket. Avoid bleach for the same reasons.. and bleach can also irritate babies skin.

Nappies dont take up all your time washing them.. i used to wash every other day.. in between my normal amount of clothes washing, and with a family of five children, the machine was always on anyways, whats an extra wash every few days.

Drying time varies depending on the nappy itself.. the thicker the nappy the longer it will take to dry.. tumble drying on a low heat is ok.. but not for a long time..

Best way to dry your nappies, is on the washing line. This is also great for sunning out stains.. which can happen occassionally.. the sun is a natural bleacher.

To prevent stains its advisable to use a fleece or paper liner, to protect the nappy.. fleece is a stain resistant fabric and washes very easily..

there are so many kinds of nappies, shaped nappies and shaped wraps (a cover) the good old terry squares are still available, and perfect for families on a tight budget..

worried about using pins? then dont be, most nappies fasten with velcro or poppers (plastic type buttons) making putting on a cloth nappy much easier than you think.

Most cloth nappies are shaped just like a disposable, but work out far cheaper in the long run. Once you have your “stash” of nappies then there are only the washing costs to contend with.

You can save more money, by using your nappies on future children or selling  your stash of nappies on.. therefore making some of your money back.. something you cannot do with a disposable nappy!

Using  cloth also saves you bin space, and most places now have fortnightly collections.. think how much space you are saving in your bin, by not using disposables..
